Last year, while working on a study on the vision of Latvia’s hydrogen economy and its strategic challenges, we concluded that Latvia has good prerequisites and that the work must definitely be continued.
We are glad to have become part of the Latvian hydrogen economy ecosystem, which includes participants from both private companies and public administration institutions.
In our study, we concluded that, unlike other countries, in the case of Latvia, hydrogen could be used both in energy and in export products. We have received interested feedback from companies in other countries, both from Scandinavia and from Germany, where the hydrogen sector is much more developed.
Latvia has the potential to become a major player in the hydrogen sector in Northern Europe. With a marine and terrestrial environment rich in wind resources, well-developed infrastructure and close cooperation between industry and the public sector, Latvia has all the prerequisites for the introduction of hydrogen technologies.
Some key factors explaining Latvia’s position in this area:
✅ Strategic geographical location, which allows us to combine port and offshore wind energy into a single hydrogen production and export cluster, converting hydrogen into other products, such as ammonia. Our ports have long-standing experience in working with ammonia, so this experience would be one of the advantages
✅ Existing gas infrastructure, which can be adapted for hydrogen storage and transportation.
✅ Growing investment and innovation, which promotes the development of green energy. Latvia has significant experience in the green energy sector, both in the fields of solar and hydropower. Hydrogen is a new level of challenge – a united and coordinated work of several institutions is needed to turn the potential of hydrogen into new business successes.
